What is Transcontinental railroad?
The first transcontinental railroad in North America was a 1,911-mile continuous train line built between 1863 and 1869 that linked Council Bluffs, Iowa on the east coast with Oakland Long Wharf on San Francisco Bay on the west. The two American coastlines being linked made it simpler than ever before to export goods from the West to the East. As a result of better access to new lands for settlers thanks to the railroad, conflicts between Native American tribes and settlers increased as a result of westward expansion.
Any continuous rail line running between the Missouri or Mississippi Rivers and the U.S. Atlantic coast and connecting a location on the U.S. Pacific coast with one or more of the railroads of the country's eastern trunk line rail systems is referred to as a transcontinental railroad in the United States.
