Desynchronization is helpful for planning the execution of tasks by nodes at various times. Resource sharing, TDMA scheduling, and collision avoidance all benefit from this characteristic.
We present DWARF (Desynchronization With an ARtificial Force field), an unique method for desynchronization in wireless networks, which is inspired by robotic circular formation. Artificial forces are used by each neighboring node to deter other nodes from performing activities at various time periods.
The forces that pull nodes apart in the time domain are stronger for nodes with similar time phases. According to the forces it receives, each node modifies its time phase. Nodes are desynchronized once the received forces are balanced. We test our DWARF implementation using TOSSIM, a wireless sensor network simulator. According to the simulation results, DWARF scales far better than existing methods and experiences significantly fewer desynchronization faults.
