The pattern of slow, rhythmic contractions of the small intestine during fasting is called the Migrating motor complex (MMC).

The migrating motor complex (MMC) can be described as a rhythmic motility pattern of the small intestine that tends to occur at the time of fasting. The migrating motor complex (MMC) helps in clearing the digestive tube from materials that are undigested.

The migrating motor complex (MMC) is divided into four major periods which are mentioned below:

  • The smooth muscle inactivity period during which the action potential and contractions are lowered. This phase lasts from 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Progressive peristaltic contractions period which results for 30 minutes.
  • The period of rapid peristaltic contractions which occurs for 5 to 10 minutes. During this time, the pylorus passes the indigestible materials to the small intestine.
  • A short transition period
