Metabolic assay is the differential test which is a the type of the voges-proskauer test.

The formation of a red color with the addition of potassium hydroxide to cultures grown on certain medium was originally noticed by Voges and Proskauer in 1898.

To find out if an organism makes acetylmethyl carbinol from glucose fermentation, do the Voges-Proskauer (VP) test. Acetylmethyl carbinol, if existing, undergoes diacetylation in the existence of alpha-naphthol, strong alkali (40% KOH), and oxygen from the atmosphere.

With those, the test (differential) which is the metabolic assay,  is the type of  the voges-proskauer test.
