Another method of neurotransmitter deactivation is by uptake of neurotransmitters by pre-synaptic membrane at nerve terminal. This nerve terminal can be the one who released it or another adjacent nerve terminal.

The degradation of neurotransmitter is important as after stimulating the nerve cell, it is released back by the post-synaptic terminal. If this neurotransmitter is not degraded, it will keep on stimulating the nerve cell generating action potential leading to harmful consequences.
