Toxic substances can be described as a broad group of chemicals that can damage plants and animals, including humans. There are several categories of toxic substances that have the potential to impact surface waters in Vermont. While numerous Vermonters know that toxic mercury contaminates fish and fish-eating wildlife, there are numerous other classes of toxic compounds that are worth accepting in this strategy.
For the intent of this strategy, toxic compounds are classified into five categories: atmospherically deposited compounds; organic and inorganic pollutants that result from industrial, manufacturing, or non-point discharges from other points and facilities; Pesticides; Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs); and biological pollutants. These groups meditate on the similarity of management options that are applied to address each contaminant group. There are four routes by which a toxic substance can enter the body: inhalation, skin (or eye) absorption, ingestion, and injection.
