The relationship between the Spanish and native Americans in the Caribbean and south America was terrible because the natives were treated extremely badly.

Native Americans were particularly at risk during the colonial era because they had no protection against diseases brought from Europe, such as smallpox, unlike some Europeans who did. Diseases brought by European settlers destroyed Native Americans, killing up to 90% of their population by some estimates. Although there were many epidemics before the colonial era began in the 1500s, several significant epidemics occurred among various Native American communities during the 17th and 18th centuries. It became increasingly difficult to resist European expansion as people got sicker and sicker. So after some time the Spaniards began enslaving the Native Americans and began to oppress them.
