What is hypothyroidism?

  • In the human body, a butterfly-shaped organ is present in the base of the neck which is known as the thyroid gland. This gland releases hormones that control the metabolism of the body.
  • This gland is a part of the endocrine system and is responsible for production, storage and releasing hormones into the bloodstream.
  • The two main hormones produced by the thyroid gland are Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4).
  • Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce the sufficient amounts of thyroid hormones. Some causes of hypothyroidism are autoimmune disease like Hashimoto's thyroiditis, radiation therapy, thyroid surgery, medications, pituitary disorders, iodine deficiency and so on.
  • When hypothyroidism is untreated it can lead to a number of health problems like goiter, infertility, heart problems, myxedema, mental health issues.
