American identity for Whitman mostly avoided the ideas of independence, mass freedom, and democratic room for all human and political endeavors. For Hughes, he talks about America's identity as being divided.

It's challenging to define the word "American identity" because Americans don't have a common racial, national, religious, or linguistic origin. Being an American has always meant adhering to a national culture based on racial, ethnic, and religious ideals. It altered. We went back to the fundamentals, realizing that America is a cultural mash-up that creates a new breed. This country wasn't built on a single culture. It is based on concepts.
