In the life cycle of zygomycetes, after the zygospore is formed, the next event will be meiosis to form haploid spores.

Zygomycetes are a small class of fungi that are classified under the Phylum Zygomycota (meaning conjugated fungi), under the Kingdom Fungi. Their survival depends on dead, decaying matter as they only grow on it. They can be found growing on the surface of fruits, bread and vegetables.

Zygomycetes usually undergo asexual reproduction, but when conditions become unfavourable, they undergo sexual reproduction. Two gametes are produced and fuse by Karyogamy, forming a diploid zygospore. The zygospore remains inside a protective shell until unfavourable conditions have passed, then undergo meiosis to give rise to haploid spores. The haploid spores then continue to divide by mitosis, giving rise to a new organism.
