Hypothyroidism is a condition of underproduction of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland. Thyroid cells are the only cells to use iodine. They absorb iodine from the blood and produce two hormones, namely thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The deficiency of iodine in the blood hinders this function leading to the underproduction of these hormones. Therefore, coming up with hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism is treated with synthetic T4 called levothyroxine. T4 is converted into T3 after absorption in the body tissues. The patients are advised to take the medicine alone on an empty stomach because of their inability to get absorbed with other medications.
