Diệm and his younger brother Ngô Đình Nhu managed to escape to a loyalist shelter in Cholon. After surrendering to the coup plotters with the promise of safe exile, they were instead executed on the Orders of Minh.
The news of their execution made the people of Saigon happy because they were finally liberated from their tyrannical ruler.
