In 1989, the Tiananmen square protests illustrate the difference between totalitarian and democratic societies  in regard to collective action.

Protests began on April 15 and were violently suppressed on June 4 when the government declared martial law and dispatched the People's Liberation Army to occupy parts of central Beijing. The death toll is estimated to be in the hundreds to thousands, with thousands more injured.

Outside of China, the square is best known for the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre, which resulted in a military crackdown, also known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre or the June Fourth Massacre. Mao was the face on Tiananmen Square.
