The atomic (hybrid) orbital which makes up C₂ is sp² hybrid orbitals while the atomic (hybrid) orbital which makes up Cl is p-atomic orbital.

What is hybridization?

Hybridization can be defined as a phenomenon in chemistry which involves the linear combination of two (2) or more atomic orbitals of a molecule or chemical compound, in order to form the same number of hybrid orbitals, with each of the orbital having equal amount of energy and the same shape.

Since carbon (C) in dichloroethylene (CH₂CCl₂) is bonded with two (3) sigma bonds, two carbon (C),  two chlorine (Cl), and two hydrogen (H) bond, we can logically deduce the following:

  1. The atomic (hybrid) orbital which makes up C₂ is sp² hybrid orbitals.
  2. The atomic (hybrid) orbital which makes up Cl is p-atomic orbital.
