Puritans of the so-called middling sort different from most of the English population -they were a little more prosperous than most.

Unlike many of the early colonists to America, the Puritans came in groups of families rather than just young men. These families were not only wealthier than other colonial settlers, but also smarter and more educated.

The Pilgrims were a Separatist group who founded Plymouth Colony in 1620. Non-separating Puritans were instrumental in establishing the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1629, Saybrook Colony in 1635.

The Puritans were members of the Puritanism religious reform movement, which arose within the Church of England in the late 16th century.
