Yes, I am here to ensure that you have a better and a healthier environment. I help to protect and preserve the environment.

Do you work with a specific organization? What are some different ways volunteers help?

I work with Environment Agency. The Environment Agency is a non-departmental public organization founded in 1996 by the United Kingdom government's Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, with duties for environmental protection and enhancement throughout England.

We recruit volunteers from time to time. One of the initiatives where we need a lot of input form volunteers is with the River Thames Volunteer Assistant Lock Keepers.

What can you tell me about the people who benefit from your efforts?

Everyone living in this community will benefit from our efforts. The declared goal of the Environment Agency is to "guard or enhance the environment as a whole" in order to advance "the goal of attaining sustainable development" (taken from the Environment Act 1995, section 4).

Environmental protection is concerned with risks such as flooding and pollution. This is a social benefit.

Why do you perform this service? How long have you been involved?

We exit to protect mankind from going too far with Earth-damaging activities. There are also Earth-damaging activities that occur naturally. Solving these problems, and preventing them is why we exist.

We have been in operation since 1995. That's about 27 years.

What advice would you give someone starting out with volunteer work?

The advice is quite simple. Be very clear on the reason why you want to volunteer. Volunteering can be tough but rewarding.

Why did you choose this person to interview?

I chose to interview this person because, his work embraces nature and mankind. We need to protect the earth. We need more people like him.
