Unconditioned response (UCR): The natural reaction to a natural stimulus. The UCR in Pavlov's experiment was salivation. Conditioned stimulus (CS): A neutral stimulus that does not naturally elicit the target response but may do so after several associations with the UCS. The conditioned stimulus in classical conditioning is a previously neutral stimulus that, after becoming associated with the unconditioned stimulus, eventually comes to trigger a conditioned response. An unconditioned response is an unlearned response that occurs naturally in response to an unconditioned stimulus in classical conditioning. 1 For example, if the unconditioned stimulus is the smell of food, the feeling of hunger in response to the smell of food is the unconditioned response.
