Reverend Hale has John take the ten commandments of Christianity to help prove he is a godly man.
Reverend Hale enquired about the recent witchcraft trials in which Proctor's name was also mentioned in the court during his visit to Proctor's house. He questioned the Proctor about his minimal church attendance. He also asked Proctor about not baptizing his third child yet.
Proctor stated the excuse of his wife's illness for his low church attendance. He further said that he delayed the baptizing ceremony of his third child as he did not want Reverend Parris to be a part of the ceremony as he did not reflect any 'light of god'.
Hale asked Proctor to repeat the ten commandments of Christianity in order to prove his Christian character. Proctor repeats only nine commandments and forgets one which is adultery. His wife reminded him of adultery as one of the commandment.
Ironically, Proctor forgot only the seventh commandment in which he committed sin. Proctor had an affair with Abigail and committed adultery. His forgetfulness reflected his guilty conscience.
