An object seen in the water will usually appear to be at a different depth than it actually is, due to the refraction of light rays as they travel from the water into the air.

Light rays meditated from the item are refracted on the surface of the water, however our eyes and brain trace the light rays returned into the water as though traveled away in a straight line, and no longer refracted at all.

This results in a photo of the item that appears at a shallower depth to where it clearly is.

A very good instance of refraction is when you see the lowest of a swimming pool. The light travels from the bottom of the pool, thru the water, then via the air into your eye.

The light travels in such a manner that the pool regularly appears to be shallower than it certainly is.
