What is wound healing?

Wound healing is defined as the natural processes that is undertaken by the body system to replace worn out tissues or missing cellular structures.

Wound healing starts immediately there is break in the continuity of skin surface and my take days or a year to complete.

There are four stages of wound healing which include the following:

  • Hemostasis,
  • inflammation,
  • proliferation, and
  • remodelling.

At the remodeling stage of wound healing, scar tissue formation occurs but depends of the severity of the injury.

A surgery incision is a typical example of wound that heals by scar formation which occurs by the build-up of collagen in the granulation tissue that newly formed.

The scar formation may give a wound site am unpleasant appearance, therefore, it is important that as a nurse, you should inform the patient on what to expect during healing of their surgical wounds.
