When the Pullman Strike happened, the president of the United States was President Grover Cleveland who was a supporter of big business and the railroad companies. He therefore was against the strikers and the trade unions that organized the strike.
He went to a federal court to grant him an injunction that would allow him to suppress the strikes and this was granted to him on July 2, 1894. He then sent federal troops to stop the strike by force and the resulting riots led to 26 civilians dying.
