Now it’s time for you to test your new active listening skills. Find a video of any speech you like online and listen to around ten minutes of it, the same amount of time you listened to Gordon Brown’s speech. This time don’t just try to listen, really engage in the listening process. Repeat what the speaker is saying mentally, and write it down. Create mental pictures and doodle if you like, whatever allows you to remain focussed on the speaker’s words. Then answer the following questions:
What is the Internet address of the speech you listened to?
At what point (if at all) did you catch yourself first "zoning out"?
What were the main points of this ten-minute section and how much of it do you remember?
If your attention wandered at all, why was this?
