What is the difference between open chain exercises and closed chain exercises?

There are two types of kinetic chain exercises: open and closed. In open kinetic chain exercises, the segment farthest from the body - that is the distal side, usually an arm or leg - is free and not attached to an object. In a closed loop, it is fixed or stationary.

In a closed loop, movement in one segment causes movement in all  other joints. For example, in squatting, knee joint movement is accompanied by  hip and ankle joint movement. Basically, closed circuit exercises work multiple joints and multiple muscles simultaneously.
