From the experiment conducted by Marcie with a bag of marbles,

Total number of times a purple marble is drawn, i.e purple is 1

Total number of different colors of marbles drawn, i.e whole is 20 as shown below

[tex]=5+6+4+1+4=20[/tex]

The formula to find the proportion of purple marble drawn by Marcie is

[tex]\frac{\text{Purple}}{\text{Whole}}=\frac{\text{\% of purple}}{100}[/tex]

Where

[tex]\begin{gathered} \text{Purple}=1\text{ and} \\ \text{Whole}=20 \end{gathered}[/tex]

Substitute the values into the formula of proportion above

[tex]\begin{gathered} \frac{1}{20}=\frac{\text{\% of purple}}{100} \\ \text{Crossmultiply} \\ 1\times100=20\times\text{\% of purple } \\ \text{Divide both sides by 20} \\ \text{\% of purple}=\frac{100}{20}=5\text{\%} \\ \text{\% of purple}=5\text{\%} \end{gathered}[/tex]

Hence,

Based on Marcie's experiment, the proportion of purple marble in the bag she would expect is 5%
