ponyboy repeatedly states that he "doesn't use his head". what does this mean and what are some examples of him not using his head? outsiders

First off The Outsiders is the best movie/book ever. Second, the phrase means he doesn't think before he does actions. I can't think of an example.

An example is when Ponyboy thinks Darry doesn't like him but he's just "not using his head".
