The butterflies have warning coloring, or aposematic coloration.
A warning coloration called an aposematic coloration is one that some organisms (prey) display to deter potential predators from injuring or killing them. Because of the strong colors they display, which make them unappealing, this type of defense mechanism may make the prey difficult to eat. It alerts predators that they can be dangerous to eat. The Monarch butterfly is an illustration of such a creature. A biological mechanism called an aposematic mechanism is used by noxious or harmful organisms to alert potential predators to their presence. After realizing the deadly organism is an unfavorable prey, the predator decides not to assault it.
