Acquired illness. Some malarial parasites are resistant to some disease carriers. The mutation in the resistance is neutral, harmful, and beneficial.
If one of the parents passes the sickle cell gene to the child, there is a 50% (or 1 in 2) chance that the child will also have SCT if both parents have the condition.
This condition is autosomal recessive, meaning that both copies of the gene exist in each cell. Each parent gives one copy of the faulty gene to a child who has an autosomal recessive illness.
