The nurse should ask a patient "Have you ever received a blood transfusion" while observing his health history.

What is a blood transfusion?

It is a life-saving procedure in which donated blood is provided through a narrow tube placed within a vein in the arm. It replaces lost blood during surgery or injury.

Complications of blood transfusion:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Fever
  • Acute immune Hemolytic reaction
  • Blood-borne infections

Immune-mediated transfusion reactions occur when incompatible blood is transfused into a patient's blood circulatory system.

If incompatible blood is given in a transfusion, the donor cells are treated as foreign invaders by the immune system which attacks them accordingly.

Compatibility for blood transfusion includes:

  • Crossmatch between donor red blood cells and recipient serum.

People with type A blood react against type B or type AB blood.

People with type B blood react against type A or type AB blood

People with type O blood react against type A, type B, or type AB blood.

People with type AB blood will not react against type A, type B, type AB, or type O blood as they are universal donors.

Hence incompatible blood transfusion most probably causes abnormal immune function.
