Pioneering Hungarian-Canadian endocrinologist János Hugo Bruno "Hans" Selye CC (Hungarian: Selye János; January 26, 1907–October 16, 1982) produced significant scientific research on the fictitious non-specific response of an organism to stimuli. Selye was aware of the function of glucocorticoids in the stress response, despite the fact that he was unaware of all of their various characteristics. He is regarded by Charlotte Gerson as being the pioneer in proving that biological stress exists.
Selye was raised in Komárom and was born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, on January 26, 1907. (the town with Hungarian majority in present day Slovakia was cut by the Treaty of Trianon in 1920). Selye's mother was Austrian, while his father was a doctor of Hungarian descent. He earned his doctorate in medicine and chemistry in Prague in 1929, and he later conducted groundbreaking research in stress and endocrinology at Johns Hopkins University, McGill University, and the Université de Montréal. In 1949, he received his initial nomination for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He was nominated 17 times over his career, but he never took home the award.
