What is Preload?
Preload is yet another way to state EDV. The preload increases as the EDV increases. Filling time, or the length of ventricular diastole during which filling takes place, is one of the most important variables to take into account. The filling time gets shorter as the heart beats faster, and the EDV and preload decrease as well. The heart can somewhat counteract this effect by increasing the second variable, contractility, and elevating SV, but with time preload diminishes because the heart can no longer make up for the lower filling time.
EDV (or preload) rises with increasing ventricular filling, and the heart muscle itself is stretched to a higher extent. The ventricular muscle stretches slightly while at rest, although the sarcomeres are still very short. The ventricular muscle stretches more when ventricular fullness rises, leading to an increase in sarcomere length. Because more myosin heads are able to bind to actin on the thin filaments when the sarcomeres grow to their ideal lengths, more cross bridges are formed, resulting in stronger contraction and SV. The force of contraction would be reduced if this process persisted and the sarcomeres were allowed to extend past their ideal lengths.
