1) Two strong symbols from Raisin in the Sun are;

  • Mama's Plant which symbolizes her care and her dream for her family; and
  • Asagi represents Africa. His character prompts the reader to examine what it means to be an African Mother.

2) Using dramatic Irony, the officer stops Leonard Mead on his evening walk and eventually sends him to a mental hospital. This is an irony because, Leonard Mead might be regarded as normal in our culture, but he is odd in his because he does things like walk, which should not be punished. The Dystopian Setting where reading has been outlawed and people are confined to their television helps to highlight this irony.

3) In the excerpt from "Notes of a Native Son" by James Baldwin, the narrator uses inductive reasoning to go from the philosophical imagery surrounding the death of his father and expands that into communicating the principles that make hatred and ethnic bias a thing to be considered with contempt. Note his reference to the Immutable Law about hatred.
