The American Moral Reform Society (AMRS) was founded in Philadelphia in 1836 by a group of elite black leaders to advance the morality of white and black Americans through the influence of temperance, education, economics, and universal liberty. was established.
The AMRS was a direct outgrowth of the National Convention Movement (NCM), which first met in Philadelphia in 1830, and adopted many of the movement's reform programs. At the 5th NCM Annual Conference in 1835, the delegates accepted his proposal for the establishment of the AMRS, drafted by William Whipper, a black abolitionist attorney. Black Philadelphians dominated this process and provided the majority of the company's elected officers. Appointments included Bishop Morris Brown of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and James Forten Sr., the first president of AMRS. An NCM conference was planned in New York the following year, but it never took place, and the AMRS replaced the Congressional Movement until it was dissolved.
