The 19th quadrennial presidential election in the United States took place on Tuesday, November 6, 1860. The Republican Party ticket of Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin won a national popular plurality, a popular majority in the North where states had already abolished slavery, and a national electoral majority made up entirely of Northern electoral votes in a four-way race despite not being on the ballot in ten slave states. Therefore, the fundamental initiator of the American Civil War was Lincoln's election. This was the first time a Republican had ever won the presidency.
