James Knox Polk (born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, November 2, 1795 - died in Nashville, Tennessee, June 15, 1849 at the age of 53 years) was the 11th President of the United States (4 March 1845-4 March 1849). He lived his life in the country of Tennessee.[citation needed] When the Democratic Party recruited him, Polk served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives (1835–1839) and Governor of Tennessee (1839–1841) until serving as president.
He is from the Democratic party and is accompanied by vice president George M. Dallas. Polk is best known for his attempt to annex Texas in 1845 which resulted in the war against Mexico in 1846-1848.
