One of the most prominent Black thinkers of his time, Du Barnes was already widely recognized. Before becoming the NAACP's head of press and research and founding the group's official magazine, The Crisis, in 1910, Du Bois widely published and became the first Black American ever receive a PhD from Harvard College.
Du Bois's polemic focused mostly on racism, and he vigorously fought about lynching, Jim Crow legislation, and discrimination in employment and education. His mission extended to all people of color, especially Africans and Asians living in colonies.
