The Gulf War Oil Spill was an oil spill that happened when the nation of Iraq was fighting a multinational force led by the United States, over the invasion and occupation of Kuwait by the Iraqis. The Iraqis under Saddam Hussein, had invaded Kuwait in order to use the vast oil reserves of the nation to replenish their costs from the very damaging Iran - Iraq war.

The United States was mandated to liberate Kuwait by the United Nations, and a multinational force arrived to invade Kuwait. However, the Iraqis became desperate and tried to stop the multinational force from landing. One way they attempted this was by dumping oil into the Persian Gulf which led to the Gulf War Oil Spill.
