What was the impact of the Great Migration on the North?
Due to migration, especially to major cities, the African-American population in the Northern states expanded by almost 40% between 1910 and 1930. Some of the largest rises in the twentieth century occurred in Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Baltimore, and New York City.
African Americans from the south moved to the north during the Great Migration after World War One. They left the south to avoid its segregation and to pursue employment prospects in the defense sector. Cities in the north continued to practice discrimination.
