Laertes, who is enraged and determined to get revenge for the death of his father, bursts into the hallway. In an effort to calm him down, Claudius tells him straight out that Polonius is no more.
Gertrude adds tensely that Claudius is innocent in the matter. Laertes erupts into wrath once again when Ophelia approaches, clearly mad. For a while, Ophelia's clothes kept her aloft, but finally she sank to her death. Laertes, whose sadness becomes overwhelming, flees in a passion. In an effort to calm him down, Claudius and Gertrude follow him.
Ophelia is once more in Laertes' arms as he leaps into her grave. Hamlet bursts upon the group, distraught and enraged, proclaiming in agonising passion his own love for Ophelia.
