In each H2O molecule, the hydrogen (white) and oxygen (red) atoms are held together by powerful connections known as covalent bonds. The V-shaped H2O molecule takes on a little different charge on each end because oxygen and hydrogen draw the shared electrons in different ways. Comparing the region around the oxygen to the opposite, hydrogen-containing end of the molecule, which is somewhat positive, the area around the oxygen is somewhat negative.
