A partially contained, coastal body of water called an estuary is where freshwater from rivers and streams and saltwater from the ocean mingle. Estuaries and the regions around them serve as transitional areas from land to sea. Fjords are estuaries that were created in the deep, U-shaped basins that advancing glaciers hollowed out. Rapid sea level rise submerged river valleys and filled glacier crevasses, creating estuaries. They turned into mud, sand, and gravel traps for sediments found in rivers and streams. As these sediments expand along the shore, tidal flats begin to form.
