Pelvic splanchnic nerves, also known as nervi erigentes are splanchnic nerves, arise from the anterior rami of spinal nerves S2-S4 and distribute freely across the abdominal and pelvic cavities to innervate the abdominopelvic viscera. The primary function of the pelvic splanchnic nerves is to provide parasympathetic input to the pelvic autonomic ganglia. They proceed to the corresponding inferior hypogastric plexus on their side, which is located bilaterally on the rectum walls. They have both preganglionic parasympathetic and visceral afferent fibers. As a result, the pelvic splanchnic nerves innervate the majority of pelvic organs, including the digestive organs, urinary bladder, hindgut, ureters, prostate.
