Working memory, which refers to the systems and procedures utilized for momentarily retaining and modifying information, is distinct from short-term memory. In the 19th century, the concept of distinct memories for short-term and long-term storage first emerged.
A memory model created in the 1960s made the assumption that all memories are created in one store and move to other stores after a brief interval. The "modal model," as it is known, was most memorably described by Shiffrin. According to the model, sensory memory, which has a vast capacity but can only retain information for milliseconds, is where memory is initially stored.
