The south was the main trader before the civil war and It hurt the agricultural trading the south was doing with Europe. The south lost money and the north kept the agricultural product trade local 

Tariffs benefited the North, because it caused more people to buy from them because it was cheaper to do instead of buying from outside of the United States. The South disliked them because they did most of their business with Britain, and it would now cost more to do so.
