The Standing Rock Sioux tribe protest the Dakota Access Pipeline because it would run under sacred American Indian sites.
The Dakota Access Pipeline was opposed by the Standing Rock Sioux tribe as well as the Cheyenne River Sioux tribe even though it does not crossing tribal lands. Standing Rock Chairman Dave Archambault II in September 2014 indicated the tribe's opposition to any pipeline within treaty boundaries encompassing the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming. The Standing Rock Sioux tribe contended that the route would run across sacred sites and be a potential hazard to its water supply.
Protests began at pipeline construction sites during the spring of 2016 in North Dakota and drew indigenous people, who call themselves land defenders and water protectors, from throughout North America as well as many other supporters to create the largest gathering of Native Americans in the past hundred years.
