The 28th Bomb Wing is the Ellsworth host unit (28 BW). The 28 BW, along with the 7th Bomb Wing at Dyess AFB in Texas, is one of the two B-1B Lancer wings operated by the Air Force and is part of the Eighth Air Force of the Global Strike Command. Colonel John Edwards served as the 28th Bomb Wing's commander in 2017, and Chief Master Sergeant Adam Vizi served as his command chief master sergeant.
Approximately 8,000 military personnel, their families, and civilian workers reside in Ellsworth. The population of Rapid City is little over 62,500. In the west of South Dakota, there are roughly 3,800 retired military personnel. For many years, Rapid City residents' symbolic B-52 Stratofortress was displayed at Ellsworth's main gate Recently, a new entryway was installed.
