Child labor laws: In general, federal child labor laws restrict the hours and types of work that minors under the age of 16 are allowed to perform and forbid the employment of minors under the age of 18 in any hazardous occupation. They also prohibit the employment of minors under the age of 14 in non-agricultural occupations.

According to the Pennsylvania Child Labor Act, all minors between the ages of 14 and 17 must have a work permit in order to work. For those who are under the age of 16, a written declaration from the minor's parent or legal guardian is also necessary. No minor under the age of 16 may be employed or permitted to work in a gainful occupation covered by this chapter for more than four hours on any given day.
