What was the message of Zimbardo's experiment on how people behave?
According to Zimbardo, the experiment demonstrated how people's distinct personalities can become muddled when they are given positions of responsibility. Some guards did attempt to alter the system, as Zimbardo has acknowledged. Later, he looked into the idea of "heroes," or people who resist the system.
However, the Stanford Prison Experiment contends that extreme institutions lead to extreme behavior. Prisons aren't sterile environments. As Zimbardo's students self-selected into a study of prison life, guards do actually choose their careers.
Zimbardo came to the conclusion that despite the social roles conflicting with their moral principles, people readily comply to them. Additionally, he came to the conclusion that situational circumstances were mostly to blame for the behavior observed.
