The motion sensor depends on the following for its operation:
1. the emission of a short burst of sound waves.
3. measurement of the time between the burst and the detection of an echo.
4. calculation of a distance from the time and the speed of sound.
A motion sensor can be defined as an electrical device that is designed and developed to detect and measure nearby movement (motion) through the use of a sensor or an infrared radiation. Thus, a motion sensor is typically used to detect when a person or an object moves within the sensor's defined range.
Basically, there are two (2) main types of motion sensors and these include;
- Passive motion sensors: it is designed to have only receiver but no transmitter.
- Active motion sensors: it is designed with both a transmitter and a receiver.
For the effective and smooth operation of a motion sensor, the following are typically required;
I. There must be an emission of at least a short burst of sound waves for the motion sensor to detect.
II. A measurement of the time between the burst of sound waves and the detection of an echo of this sound.
III. The distance with respect to time and the speed of sound must be calculated.
