give
Give is an action verb. Indirect and direct objects are only found in sentences with action verbs. Were, is and am are all linking or helping verbs. They may be used in a sentence with an action verb, but they do not necessarily indicate an indirect object is possible. An indirect object receives the direct object of the verb. For example, I will give Josh my Pepsi. Give is an action verb because it's something I can do. Pepsi is the direct object. It is the thing that directly connects to the verb. I think about it in terms of event order. To give the Pepsi to Josh, first I have to pick up the Pepsi - this is the direct object. Then I give it to Josh. Josh is second so it is the indirect object.
