The Balsam fir is the most fragrant of the trees. They're durable and have short, flat, dark green needles. They do dry out quickly so be sure to check their water levels often.

What is balsam fir?

A small to medium-sized evergreen tree, the balsam fir can grow to a height of 27 meters on rare occasions. Dark-green, thick leaves make up the short conic crown.

On young trees, the bark is grey, smooth, and covered in resin blisters; on older trees, the bark becomes rough, fissured, or even scaly.

The leaves are flat and needle-like, 15 to 30 mm long, with two white stomatal bands below and a slightly notched tip, as well as a small patch of stomata near the tip.

On the stalk, they are grouped spirally, but the leaf bases are twisted, giving the impression that there are two roughly horizontal rows of leaves on either side of the shoot.

The further up the tree they are, the shorter and thicker the needles get.
